Despite former closer Henry Owens rejoining the team and news of a trade involving Armando Benitez, Florida Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said Kevin Gregg will remain the closer. “Kevin’s going to be the guy who is going to be closing for us,” Gonzalez said Thursday night before the Marlins lost 4-3 to the the Milwaukee [...]

Giants trade Benitez to Marlins for Messenger (AP)

The San Francisco Giants traded struggling closer Armando Benitez to the Florida Marlins for reliever Randy Messenger on Thursday night. Benitez was not in the clubhouse after the Giants’ 4-2 loss and his locker was completely cleaned out. “Maybe Elvis has left the building,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.

Prince Fielder hit his league-leading 19th homer, J.J. Hardy drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth and the Milwaukee Brewers beat the Florida Marlins 4-3 on Thursday night. Corey Hart doubled with two outs in the eighth and Hardy followed with a single off Matt Lindstrom (0-2) for his team-leading 46th RBI.

Giants agree to trade Benitez to Marlins for Messenger (AP)

The San Francisco Giants agreed to trade struggling closer Armando Benitez to the Florida Marlins for reliever Randy Messenger on Thursday night. Neither team made an official announcement. Marlins’ Gregg to stay as closer with the return of Owens (AP)

Reliever Kevin Gregg’s recent performances have been enough for Marlins manager Freddi Gonzalez to decide just what role Gregg is taking in the bullpen with former closer Henry Owens rejoining the team. “Kevin’s going to be the guy who is going to be closing for us,” Gonzalez said Thursday night before the Marlins played the [...]

    Marlins 9, Cubs 0 (AP)

Sergio Mitre could have been excused for letting out some frustration. He decided, however, to keep it positive. The Marlins starting pitcher was dominating the Cubs. His teammates were hitting the ball all over Wrigley Field. And then, Mitre was limping off the field Wednesday, putting a damper on a night when Florida beat up [...]

Mitre leaves after being hit by throw (AP)

Florida Marlins pitcher Sergio Mitre left Wednesday’s game against the Chicago Cubs with a cramp in his right hamstring. The Marlins were leading 3-0 when Cubs starter Ted Lilly hit Aaron Boone leading off the inning. Mitre then laid down a bunt, and Lilly bobbled the ball before rushing the throw toward first.

    Marlins 9, Cubs 4 (AP)

Lou Piniella didn’t need too many words to sum up what he saw Tuesday night. Jeremy Hermida hit a tiebreaking three-run homer in the fifth inning and Josh Willingham added a three-run double in the eighth to lead the Florida Marlins to a 9-4 victory over the slumping Chicago Cubs. Derrek Lee hit a solo [...]

Byung-Hyun Kim pitched six scoreless innings, Reggie Abercrombie homered and the Florida Marlins held on to beat the Chicago Cubs 5-3 on Monday. Josh Willingham had two hits and an RBI and Miguel Cabrera had three hits for the Marlins, who bounced back after getting swept by the New York Mets over the weekend.
